Holiday Music
As mentioned before in My Laura Dean, I haven't enjoyed the holiday season for the past several years. For some reason, this year has been different.
A local radio station always plays nothing but Christmas songs from Thanksgiving through Christmas Day every year. I end up having to listen to it at work as it's either this station or the country station (and I refuse to listen to that crap all day long).
Usually, I get sick of it within the first few days. Well, I've been enjoying it so far this year. Not sure if my mind has fully moved on from MLD or if it's just decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.
Either way, I've been good so far with all the holiday music.
Since the station is more family oriented or adult contemporary, they don't play the harder songs or the more comedic. Those happen to be some of my favorites. So, guess who's been loading up their iTunes with holiday songs this morning!
A hard rock favorite of mine is definitely "Carol of the Bells" by August Burns Red. It's a nice change of pace from all the family friendly versions played this time of year.
Tons of comedy songs or bits are also welcome. Everything from "Santa and His Old Lady" by Cheech and Chong to "The Twelve Pains of Christmas" to Bob and Doug McKenzie do "The Twelve Days of Christmas" to the all time great Adam Sandler and "The Chanukah Song." All four of them.
There are also movies that increase my enjoyment of certain songs. There's "It's Christmas Eve" by Alex Khaskin from A Christmas Horror Story, the theme song from Gremlins, "What's This" from Nightmare Before Christmas, and even "Christmas Time" by Bryan Adams from that awesome scene in Violent Night.
There are also times when more traditional songs are super enjoyable to me.
One such song is "Happy Xmas" by John Lennon. The connotation of peace, joy and war being over is super appealing. Especially with all the political discourse out there today.
My all time favorite though is "Christmas Canon Rock" by Trans-Siberian Orchestra. It makes me think of two star crossed lovers coming back together after being apart for so long and just in time for the holidays.
What can I say? I'm a helpless romantic.
